Ganglion Cysts

A ganglion cyst is a non-cancerous smooth lump that is filled with a jelly-like fluid. It can develop near joints and tendons and can form on the foot or ankle. The cause of these cysts is unclear, but they seem to develop in areas of trauma from a single or repeated injury. They seem to form when synovial fluid leaks from a joint or tendon and collects in a sac under the skin. Synovial fluid cushions and lubricates joints and tendons during movement. These cysts usually affect people aged 15 to 40 and are more apt to develop in females. A ganglion cyst can cause tingling if it presses on a nerve and pain if it touches a tendon or joint. Wearing shoes may be uncomfortable for those with a ganglion cyst. Such a cyst can be the size of a pea or a golf ball. It can be soft or hard. These cysts usually go away on their own, but it can take years and they can return. If you feel you may have a ganglion cyst that is causing pain or mobility issues, contact a podiatrist to have it examined. This medical professional can offer you treatment to restore you to comfort.

Flip-Flops May Not Be the Best Shoe to Wear

Open-toed shoes, such as flip-flops, are available in a variety of colors and styles and are easy to slip on and off. The feet can endure many unwanted conditions, and many people feel better mentally when flip-flops are worn. This feeling may change if the toes and arch begin to ache when this type of shoe is frequently worn. This can be a result of a lack of arch support, in addition to the toes gripping the front of the shoe to keep it on the foot. Research has indicated the entire body is affected by how the heel strikes the ground, and this may negatively affect flip-flop wearers. Despite the fact that they are best when worn poolside or to the beach, many people will wear them as everyday shoes while running errands and completing daily activities. This may lead to foot injuries concerning the heel, toes, and Achilles tendon. If you have concerns about the pros and cons of wearing flip-flops, please consult with a podiatrist who can effectively address any questions you may have.

Flip-flops are not always the best choice of footwear. If you have any concerns about your feet or ankles, contact one of our doctors from Coral Desert Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

Flip-Flops and Feet

When the weather starts warming up, people enjoy wearing flip-flops.  Flip-flops are comfortable, stylish, and easy to slip on and off; they're perfect for any summer beach goer.  However, these shoes can cause harm to the feet.

How Can Flip-Flops Affect Me Long-Term?

  • Ankle problems
  • Hip problems
  • Lower back problems
  • Pain in the balls of the feet
  • Problems with foot arches
  • Changes in the way you walk

Are There Injuries Associated with Flip-Flops?

Yes.  Since flip-flops are relatively weak and do not provide the same amount of support as sneakers, people who wear flip-flops regularly are more susceptible to injuries. On top of that, the open nature of the shoe makes your feet more prone to other problems, such as cuts and even infections.  Common injuries and ailments include:

  • Sprained ankles
  • Blisters
  • Infections
  • Cuts and Scrapes

I like Wearing Flip-Flops. Are There Safe Alternatives?

When buying flip-flops, try to find ones that have sturdy soles and that are made of high-quality materials that will support for your feet.  These flip-flops will cost more but will also last longer as a result.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in St. George and Kanab, UT, and Mesquite, NV .  We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Positive Aspects of Everyday Foot Care

It may be surprising, but one area of the body that is often neglected is the feet. When everyday foot care is practiced, the feet can look and feel their best. Investing time in foot care may help to prevent unwanted foot conditions from developing. There are simple and effective methods to implement that consist of washing and drying the feet daily, followed by applying a good moisturizer. Trimming the toenails straight across and not too short is important to possibly prevent an ingrown toenail. Calluses may be minimized by exfoliating the skin on a regular basis and this can be done by gently using a pumice stone. Additionally, this may help improve the overall appearance of the feet. The feet are susceptible to bacterial and fungal growth, which could lead to athlete’s foot and toenail fungus. If you would like more information and have questions about how to perform proper foot care, please consult with a podiatrist who can answer any questions you may have.

Everyday foot care is very important to prevent infection and other foot ailments. If you need your feet checked, contact one of our doctors from Coral Desert Foot & Ankle. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Everyday Foot Care

Often, people take care of their bodies, face and hair more so than they do for their feet. But the feet are a very important aspect of our bodies, and one that we should pay more attention to. Without our feet, we would not be able to perform most daily tasks.

It is best to check your feet regularly to make sure there are no new bruises or cuts that you may not have noticed before. For dry feet, moisturizer can easily be a remedy and can be applied as often as necessary to the affected areas. Wearing shoes that fit well can also help you maintain good foot health, as well as making it easier to walk and do daily activities without the stress or pain of ill-fitting shoes, high heels, or even flip flops. Wearing clean socks with closed shoes is important to ensure that sweat and bacteria do not accumulate within the shoe. Clean socks help to prevent Athlete’s foot, fungi problems, bad odors, and can absorb sweat.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in St. George and Kanab, UT, and Mesquite, NV . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Athlete’s Foot and Carpeting

Athlete's foot is certainly an affliction of the foot that one ought to avoid. It develops in an individual when a fungal infection takes hold of their feet often between the toes, and creates a rash. There are several ways in which an individual can take steps to avoid athlete’s foot. One often overlooked way is to be diligent about maintaining one’s carpeting. If you have bought a new home from someone else, you might find that the carpeting can be quite dirty, often still harboring fungal spores deep in the carpets. If the previous owners had walked around barefoot on those carpets, it is possible that they spread a fungus into the carpet. If this applies to you, you might consider deep cleaning the carpet to remove these damaging fungi. Doing this might ultimately protect you and your family from developing athlete’s foot. Schedule an appointment with a podiatrist to learn more.

What Is Athlete’s Foot?

Tinea pedis, more commonly known as athlete’s foot, is a non-serious and common fungal infection of the foot. Athlete’s foot is contagious and can be contracted by touching someone who has it or infected surfaces. The most common places contaminated by it are public showers, locker rooms, and swimming pools. Once contracted, it grows on feet that are left inside moist, dark, and warm shoes and socks.

Prevention

The most effective ways to prevent athlete’s foot include:

  • Thoroughly washing and drying feet
  • Avoid going barefoot in locker rooms and public showers
  • Using shower shoes in public showers
  • Wearing socks that allow the feet to breathe
  • Changing socks and shoes frequently if you sweat a lot

Symptoms

Athlete’s foot initially occurs as a rash between the toes. However, if left undiagnosed, it can spread to the sides and bottom of the feet, toenails, and if touched by hand, the hands themselves. Symptoms include:

  • Redness
  • Burning
  • Itching
  • Scaly and peeling skin

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis is quick and easy. Skin samples will be taken and either viewed under a microscope or sent to a lab for testing. Sometimes, a podiatrist can diagnose it based on simply looking at it. Once confirmed, treatment options include oral and topical antifungal medications.

Keeping Your Feet Dry in Work Boots

When you perspire, it is nature’s way of helping to regulate your body temperature. This is done through the many sweat glands throughout the body, including the toes and feet. When working on your feet, especially if you need to wear work boots, the chances of moisture collecting inside the shoes are multiplied. Keeping the feet dry can pose a challenge, but experts suggest a few ways to do just that. First, choose work boots that are breathable. Obviously, work boots must not only support your feet, but protect them. Some types of work boots are made with mesh linings that can help to keep excess moisture from building up. Also, it is suggested that wearing socks that wick moisture can help to keep your feet dry. Using foot powder and keeping your feet clean are other methods that can work to limit the buildup of bacteria, which can cause foot odor. For more information on the type of work boot that is best for your feet, please see a podiatrist.

While working on the feet, it is important to take the proper care of them. For more information about working on your feet, contact one of our doctors from Coral Desert Foot & Ankle. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Working on Your Feet

Standing on your feet for long periods of time can cause stress and pain in your feet. Your whole body may experience change in terms of posture, back pain, bunions, callouses and or plantar warts. There are ways to avoid these conditions with proper foot care, smart choices and correct posture.

Positive Changes

Negative heeled shoe – Choosing this shoe type places the heel slightly lower than the ball of the foot. These are great for overall foot health. Find shoes that fit you correctly.

Go barefoot – Our feet were not designed to be enclosed for all hours of the day. Try to periodically expose your feet to air.

Eliminate Pain

Foot Exercises – Performing simple exercises, incorporating yoga and doing stretches are beneficial. This will allow increased blood flow to the area and muscles of the foot.

Achilles tendon – Stretching the foot out flat on the floor will relax the calf muscles and tendon. These exercises can be performed almost anywhere. Make sure you add these exercises to your daily regimen.

With a little bit of this information and knowing more about foot health, you will notice changes. Foot stretches and proper footwear will help with pain and prevent further issues.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact one of our offices located in St. George and Kanab, UT, and Mesquite, NV . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.
